Welcome to the "Connecting the Generations Project". Grandparents and grandchildren often enjoy their relationship very much, but often they do not get the opportunity to interact as much as they would like. This project is a great chance for grandparents and grandchildren to get to know more about each other, and have some fun, all over a brief 8-week project. Participating in this project will also inform researchers on how to best promote grandparent and grandchild relationships. Upon completion of the project, the grandparent and grandchild will receive a $10 gift card to I Tunes or Walmart.
Are you eligible to participate?
If you are eligible, please learn more about the study:
Discover these things together through this eight-activity project, and be able to look back at your experience using a joint blog that both grandparent and grandchild can post on.
Each week a grandparent and his or her grandchild will video chat and do an activity together through Google Hangout.
After completing each activity, you will be asked to record your experience on your blog.
At the end of each week, there will be a quick survey with a few simple questions about your experience that both grandchild and grandparent will take.
Each week of this project is outlined for you using the Activities tab above. Activities can be downloaded or viewed online, however, the surveys are only available online.
Please follow the steps below to begin this project:
1. Do not skip this first step!!
Grandparents, Parents, and Grandchildren: Take the Online Pre-Survey, found at the bottom of this page. It can also be accessed from the gray bar at the top.
On this survey you will first be asked to fill out the informed consent information, which is required for further continuation in the study. The grandparent, parent, and grandchild all have to have completed the informed consent (and the remaining pre-survey) before any grandparent/grandchild activities are started.
If the grandchild is over the age of 18, he or she will complete the informed consent at the beginning of the "Grandchild Survey". His or her parent will provide consent and complete the "Parent Survey" independently.
If the grandchild is under the age of 18 he or she will provide consent together with the parent in the "Parent Survey". Then the grandchild will proceed with completing the "Grandchild Survey" and the parent will continue completing questions on the "Parent Survey".
2. Once the informed consent and pre-surveys are completed by all three parties (the grandparent, grandchild, and the parent): Grandparents and Grandchildren (with the help of their Parents if the child is under 18): Click the button below to set-up your computer for the project (this could take around 30 to 45 minutes). Keep in mind, the computer set-up page is also always available at the top of the screen, if you need to refer back to in any time.
3. Grandparents: contact your grandchild to:
1) Confirm that he or she (the grandchild) and one of his/her parents have completed the informed consent and online pre-survey
2) Confirm that they have all items from the computer set-up page completed (make sure you exchange email addresses at this time)
3) Schedule a time to sit at the computer and start Activity 1
Have fun!
If you have any questions about the study, contact the researchers listed in the informed consent document (which is included in the pre-survey assessment).

Are you eligible to participate?
- The grandparent and grandchild each need to have access to a computer with internet, and they will need a web-camera and microphone, so they they can communicate via the computer.
- Because we are connecting via the internet, grandparents can live miles away from their grandchild for this study!
- We are specifically targeting grandchildren between the ages of 11 and 22 for this study. Those grandchildren also need to choose a parent to help them set up their computer, assist with the informed consent process, and have that parent answer two brief surveys over the course of the eight week period.
If you are eligible, please learn more about the study:
- What was your grandparent like when they were your age?
- Is your grandchild just like you?
- How can you help each other?
